Folk music from Ireland and Finland
Brách represents a brand of modern Irish folk music with a strong influence from folk music of other countries as well, but they also compose some of their own tunes. Amongst the fresh Irish music also the music from Calicia and some Jewish klezmer-tunes can be heard. Lately they have even been venturing into traditional Finnish folk music. Above all, they want their music to be energetic, like rock music. They take no influence from rock music itself, but with a certain kind of attitude and 'drive' folk music itself can be very rock-like.
The band has been together since 2002 and like many other bands started from very modest surroundings, working their way onwards as interest in the band grew and new venues opened up. The transcension from session musicians to stage performers has been a very creative and refining process for the whole band. Each of the four players has a very different musical background, and this diversity they use to create unique music together. The major turnpike for the band has been the demo-cd launched in 2004, recorded live from a gig in O'Malley's Irish Bar. The demo-cd has had a lot of positive feedback from other musicians and the audience.
The name of the band is fashioned from the Irish Gaelic phrase 'go Brách', which translates as 'forever' or 'eternal'. Brách represents the next generation of the up-and-coming Irish music popularity wave in Finland, which started already in the 1980's. Although the roots of the band are in Irish music, they plan to keep an open mind and seek inspiration from other brands of folk music as well.
Brách has gained a new member
During the spring of 2008, we invited fiddle & keyed fiddle player Laura to join us. In practice, this meant that our whole repertoire had to be re-arranged... our old fans should expect to see some major surprises during our future gigs!
The recording session was a success!
After one long and troublesome weekend, we managed to get a very reasonable amount of tracks down as a trio. A teaser of things to appear on the album can be downloaded from here.
John Kelly, Tola Custy and Cyril O'Donoghue return to Finland in the fall of 2006
Flute player John Kelly, fiddler Tola Custy and singer/buzuki player Cyril O'Donoghue are coming to Finland in August for the second time already. This time they will be performing at Vanha Paukku, Lapua - the very same place they performed in during the Irish Festival in Finland 2005. At that time the concert was sold out and the audience was ecstatic. The Vanha Paukku Festival has had Irish music in their repertoire since 2000, and this year Kelly, Custy and O'Donoghue are returning to one of their favorite venues.
Domestic support by Brách trio.
